Chapter Nineteen

Ash

I stumbled out of the shed feeling lost. Everything that had happened, everything I had done was because I believed I was something I wasn’t. No, I’d never believed it. I’d never thought I was anything special. It was Michael that had believed. He staked his life on it. Mouse had lost his life because of Michael’s belief.

It was still light enough outside that I could see the crumbling skyscrapers in the distance. Heat rose from them in waves. Locusts screamed. My stomach churned and I fought not to throw up.

A hand came down on my shoulder and I spun, hooking the arm attached to it on instinct and preparing for a throw. Michael stiffened, his expression one of surprise and worry. “Ash? Everything okay?”

What was I going to say to that? Sorry, Michael, but everything you believe is a lie. There’s no hope. We’re all going to die. How are you?

Levi approached cautiously from the same direction Michael had come from. “The Oracle sometimes speaks in riddles. Whatever she said to you, I’d keep it to myself. More than one person has died from misinterpreting her words.”

I studied his calm expression. Did he know? Had he known all along I wasn’t anything important? That amused smirk and the sparkle in his eyes made me wonder. But how could he have known? I’d never told him Michael thought I was the Icon. I’d never told him anything about me.

“What are you waiting for?” I gestured toward the shed. “Go ask your question. Get your reward. Do whatever you want. Just get out of my face.”

I stormed past him, intent on reaching the small empty space behind the shed to be alone. Tears burned my eyes, threatening to fall. Why the hell did I have to cry when I was angry? Why the hell was I angry anyway? I’d never wanted to be the Icon in the first place. All I wanted was to live my life and enjoy what little time I had left. Guess that was ruined now, too. The Order had kicked me out. I had no home, no future, no family. What was the point in going on?

“Commander?” It was Noah’s voice.

I pushed the tears away with a fist. “I’m not the commander. Not anymore.”

“I know.” He limped up beside me, staring at the barricade of repurposed wood and corrugated metal in front of me. “Just like Ben’s not a lieutenant and I’m not a pilot. Never were any of those things, you know.”

I looked over at him and found him smiling at me. He reached over to clean more tears from my face with a thumb. I don’t know why, but I cared less about Noah seeing me cry than Michael, Ben, or Levi. He liked to laugh and kid, but he’d never make fun of me like Levi would, and he wouldn’t jump in to protect me or try and make things better like Ben or Michael would. In his own way, Noah understood.

“Commander was your title.
